Our new home: Surin, the town of elephants

06.01.2012

Kate, Brandon and I decided to move to a city in southern Isan named Surin to stake our new teaching claim.  The school's name is Anubarnsurin and is one of the best primary schools in Thailand.

Our friends Jen and John -- so sad to see them leave.  Happy travels, guys!

Taking a tour around town before school starts.

Durian husks

A visit to the day market

Khao Niaow - sticky rice

There are lots of murky and stagnant bodies of water that are gated-off around town.  Apparently the remnants of some kind of moat, but really just great mosquito breeding grounds.

Meeting our first elephant of the town: Lily.

And another amazing discovery... bowling alley at our local mall!  I have never been so excited to bowl.

No wonder my left butt cheek was sore the next day.

Hanging out with the cats from our local restaurant:

Retrieving our scooters!

Trip to the night market:

Tried the infamous durian for the first time... wow.  It was like garlic, rotting fruit and stinky feet all rolled into one.

First couple days of school:

Rotee stand.  So glad I found one in my new town!
Kiddlywinks!  These are my 2's in front of me at the flag ceremony in the morning.  This is their scouts uniform.

Prayer time

A conspicuous pack of falang heading to the big wednesday/saturday night market:

20 baht store.  Way better than a dollar store.
They do not kid around with these markets.
Fresh crickets.  Fried to order.

Not fresh bathroom.

Cop stand.  Pretty cute, right?
