Mothers' Day

08.10.2012

Here in Thailand, Mothers' Day is celebrated on the Queen's birthday (much like how Fathers' Day is celebrated on the King's birthday... very much like, in fact).  Mothers' Day proper was actually on  the 12th (which was a Sunday), but we had a little ceremony in the morning at school on Friday to mark the day.

But, as usual, here are a few random pictures first!

Lexy's topknot is not to be denied.

A P2 homeroom teacher gave me delicious smelling flowers wrapped in in a leaf

Looks like a little sushi handroll!

Beginning of the ceremony

Mothers' Day awards went out to teachers with successful children (from what I could gather)

Then there was an award ceremony for the kids that winning Mothers' Day poems.  I tutor this student for spelling bee.

A big group of white folk standing together and wearing blue.  This is what Thai people see.

Thai people love group photos about as much as I do!  No sarcasm.

We took our last class up to the projector room because Carmen wanted to show them some videos about Mothers' Day.  She ended up playing a handful of sappy Thai songs on YouTube about mothers.  It started out like a class karaoke, but in the end around 8 kids were balling their eyes out because they missed their moms etc.  I was a mixture of confusion and concern.

These few pictures were taken before all the students started leaking - when everything was still lighthearted.

At this point I don't even know what wat is what!

Candle ritual for Buddhist lent

This temple housed a 17 meter tall Buddha.  Thais are certainly not subtle about their religious practices!

We visited a toy museum in the afternoon.  Here's a vintage pedal scooter for kids!

I apologize for including this.  It was so sincerely creepy I couldn't help but share!

Riverside dinner.  We had some wild boar soup and fried duck with vegetables - surprisingly one of the worst meals I've had in Thailand so far!  I'm not going to go into detail.
