A Mountain of Stairs

10.27.2011

About a 20 minute drive outside of Loburi is a temple atop a mountain with ~3,700 stairs leading up to it.  This day we climbed those stairs... and did so victoriously.

Herd of cows in the road as we headed to the temple entrance.... Thai cows are skinny.

Looking fresh at the bottom of the stairs :P
GIANT Buddha of Death Star proportions under construction!  Wait til the Rebels hear about this!

There are mini-temples, huts, and benches for rest stops on your pilgrimage up the stairs.  Remember to ring the bell!
The figure at the top of the stairs is a little Thai boy that led the way for us about the first 3rd of the trip.  He would run ahead and then wait for us.  We called him our Sherpa.

Take 5

Greeted by a band of temple puppies!

Huge millepede!  Water bottle for size reference.

Those pups followed us for a little bit.  They had trouble getting up the stairs and it was really cute.

At the top!

Exploring the top, we find a helicopter landing pad and some MORE stairs!

The stairs led to another temple, and passed a monk's house.

You can see the Death Star Buddha we passed on the way up, and now it looks tiny!

Gold painted rocks

Looking pretty scruffy at the top

The house of a monk that we met at the top.  He gave us water and apples!

  1. wonderful photos, fantastic view and of course we all are growing to love the commentaries of a budding international photo journalist (Lisa) who may have intentionally or unintentionally just penned the ultimate oxymoron
    "Death Star Buddha";
sounds more Hindu than Buddhist (i.e., Lord Shiva, the Destroyer)

  2. If you end up going back, how about a puppy to millipede size reference picture?

All looks amazing! Really enjoying living vicariously through you. Not sure I spelled that right.
