Our fabulous host family bought tickets for a nice dinner and a show at a large hotel down the street for New Years evening. Us falang, after realizing we failed to pack any semi-formal attire, headed into town to remedy the situation.
Fon's family is friends with a policeman and we got dropped off into the shopping area via his cop van! |
Nok Mai mee head! These noisy birds are all over Thailand and they're pretty adorable. |
Burmese script |
We go home later and dazzle.
Fon's older sister Fai gussied Kathleen up with a fancy braid. |
Dinner:
And a show featuring a few numbers by some talented ladyboys, and then a live band.
There were a few carnival games to play which we all happened to suck at:
But they gave us one of the prizes anyway! |
Fon's family decide to call it an early-ish night, and we and Fon went to a free concert (of the Thai boy band "Sequin") at the park in town for the countdown.
There were gorgeous paper lanterns floating everywhere in the sky. We bought one as a group to send off into the night for luck for the new year.
Making a wish! |
We then watched a little bit of the concert.
"Sequin" |
Like any other boy band, adolescent girls in the audience were going NUTS. |
The park was centered around a historical building where decided to post-up for the countdown.
Silly pictures |
Happy New Year! Sooksan Wan BeeMai! |
The fireworks set-off site was incredibly close to us (right on the other side of the historical buiding), so the impressive 5-minute display right after midnight was BOOMing overhead and I was slightly worried something was going to catch on fire.
Girls swarming the band as they try to leave |
I met a very nice woman who wanted me to help set off a lantern with her family.
